As a leader, you never want to have to handle life-threatening situations, but Coach McDermott showed his stuff during the days following the injury. When facing a packed press conference three days later, McDermott did what the best leaders do: he kept the focus on Hamlin where it needed to be. “He was the perfect man…to handle that,” quarterback Josh Allen said. “I can’t say enough about what he did, what he said to us in the locker room. Obviously, just a dire circumstance that nobody’s expecting, nobody’s ready for, there’s nothing that you can train about. You can never put yourself in that situation until it happens. … Coach handled it as perfect as anybody could.”

By the way, as of the first regular season game of the 2023-2024 season, Hamlin was fully recovered and cleared to play (although he was listed as inactive). Hamlin himself, is demonstrating some of the leadership he, perhaps, learned from his coach. Hamlin has created a charity, “The Chasing-Ms Foundation.”

  • 9 playoff appearances, including one Super Bowl victory.

Scandals

  • Bountygate: In 2012, Payton was suspended for the entire 2012 season for his role in the Saints’ bounty scandal. The scandal involved the Saints offering cash rewards to players for injuring opposing players.
  • Spygate: In 2010, Payton was fined $50,000 for his role in the Saints’ Spygate scandal. The scandal involved the Saints filming opposing teams’ signals from the sidelines.

What Can We Learn?

Here are some of the things that leaders can learn from Sean Payton:

  • Create a positive and inclusive team culture. Payton is known for creating a positive and inclusive team culture. He treats all his players with respect, regardless of their background or experience. This creates a positive environment where players feel comfortable taking risks and playing their best.
  • Be a great motivator. Payton is a great motivator. He knows how to get the best out of his players. He can connect with them and get them excited about playing football.
  • Communicate effectively. Payton is a great communicator. He can communicate effectively with his players, coaches, and the media. He is clear and concise in his communication and always willing to listen to feedback.
  • Make tough decisions. Payton is not afraid to make tough decisions. He will make unpopular decisions if he believes they are in the team’s best interests.
  • Handle adversity. Payton has faced adversity throughout his career, but he has always been able to handle it. He can stay calm under pressure and make the right decisions.

Coach Peyton certainly has a checkered past as a leader. While being a brilliant coach and an effective team leader, he has also made some ridiculous stumbles along the way, more so than many of his peers. Even though the Bountygate scandal was not Coach Peyton’s idea, he knew of it and did nothing to end it. That tacit approval grossly abuses fundamental leadership power. Coach Peyton is also known for throwing childish rants when something doesn’t go his way, or someone questions his decisions. Peyton needs to exercise more restraint – take a few lessons from Frank Reich, perhaps, in being calm and cool.

Coach Peyton’s experience and accomplishments have landed him at position #5 on this year’s list. Given his past performance, I wonder if he can stay here. He’s now the head coach of the Denver Broncos, a troubled team. I suspect we’ll learn a lot about Coach Peyton this year.

Bill attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he played football and lacrosse. After graduating from Wesleyan, Belichick began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the Naval Academy.

In 2000, Belichick was hired as the head coach of the New England Patriots. He has led the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships, the most by any head coach in NFL history. He has also won three NFL Coach of the Year awards.

Belichick is known for his attention to detail, preparation, and ability to get the most out of his players. He is also a master of game planning and making halftime adjustments. However, Belichick has also been accused of being too secretive and uncommunicative with the media.

Bill Belichick is one of the most successful coaches in NFL history. He is a master tactician and a brilliant strategist. He is also a demanding leader who is fair and honest with his players.

Accomplishments

Here are some of Bill Belichick’s accomplishments as a head coach:

  • Six Super Bowl championships (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016, and 2018)
  • Three NFL Coach of the Year awards (2003, 2007, and 2010)

Scandals

  • Deflategate: In 2015, the Patriots were accused of deflating footballs during the AFC Championship Game. The NFL investigated the allegations and found “substantial and credible evidence” that the Patriots had deflated the footballs. The NFL suspended Tom Brady for four games and fined the Patriots $1 million.
  • BengalsGate: In 2019, the Patriots were caught filming the Cincinnati Bengals’ sideline without permission. The NFL fined the Patriots $1.1 million and banned them from filming games next season.

Belichick has denied any wrongdoing in all of these scandals. However, the allegations have tarnished his reputation and led to calls for his resignation.

What Can We Learn?

Here are some of the leadership lessons that leaders can learn from Bill Belichick:

  • Attention to detail: Belichick is known for his attention to detail. He is always looking for ways to improve his team and constantly studying film and scouting opponents. This attention to detail has helped him succeed in the regular season and the playoffs.

Coach Belichick tends to be rough with the media and has little patience for what he feels are ridiculous questions. In one interview, however, Belichick did seem to give in a little and provide some insight into what goes on inside his mind as a leader. “I think I know a little about coaching. I think I know a little about leadership.” He goes on to describe his five rules of leadership.

Thanks to his many Super Bowl wins, Coach Belichick owns the #1 position on this year’s ranking of NFL head coaches based on Artisan Agility’s The Leadership Ascent assessment tool.

Belichick has lost Brady, Gronkowski, and others to trades and retirement. Can he hold the #1 spot for much longer? How long before Andy Reid (#2) or another up-and-coming head coach takes over? It’ll be fun to watch.
